Life in the Flats

Meet the workers in their apartment and get up close to the lives and stories that shaped industrial society.

1924: Alma works at the town’s tobacco factory rolling cigarillos. When she is not working at the factory, there is still plenty of work to be done at home. Fortunately, her children are now old enough to lend a hand. Thanks to increasing wages and the right to more leisure time, Alma and her family can enjoy the comforts of the 1920s in their well-kept living room.

1955: Holger’s roots are firmly planted on Villavej. First his grandparents settled here, then his parents, and now Holger has made his home in the cosy neighbourhood with his wife, Jytte. As a typographer at the local newspaper, Horsens Folkeblad, Holger is able to support the entire family on a single income, allowing Jytte to stay at home and care for the house and children. That was simply the way things were at the time.

1975: Although Marie is married to a factory worker and both of her parents worked in factories, she wanted something different for herself. She dreamed of becoming a nurse and was fortunate enough to find work at Horsens Hospital. Their daughter Mette spends her days in childcare. Marie has no intention of staying at home like her mother did.
